Dubrovnik Sunset Cruise · When, What, How
Honest guide to a sunset boat cruise in Dubrovnik — best month, departure time, what's included, and how to avoid the disappointing tourist traps.
Sunset cruises in Dubrovnik are the most marketed boat product on the coast. Half the listings on Viator are mediocre. Here’s what to look for and what we actually do on ours.
When sunset is, by month
| Month | Sunset time | Departure |
|---|---|---|
| April | 19:45 | 17:30 |
| May | 20:25 | 18:00 |
| June | 20:50 | 18:30 |
| July | 20:45 | 18:30 |
| August | 20:10 | 18:00 |
| September | 19:10 | 17:00 |
| October | 18:15 | 16:00 |
Our standard departure is 17:30 — the time that works best across the season for a 3-hour cruise that spans pre-sunset, golden hour, sunset, and the afterglow.
What a good sunset cruise includes
Three things are non-negotiable:
- Pass the city walls at golden hour (60-80 min before sunset, when the limestone is glowing)
- Anchor for the actual sunset in a quiet spot (we use a bay just north of Lokrum)
- Stay through the afterglow (15-20 min after sunset — the colours actually peak then)
A “sunset cruise” that’s just a 90-minute zoom around the harbour with prosecco in plastic cups is missing the point. You want to be there at sunset, not be on your way somewhere else.
What we include
- Captain (mandatory — sunset cruises are at-sea, not at the dock)
- Bottle of chilled prosecco for the boat
- Fresh towels (it gets cool when the sun drops)
- Bluetooth audio (your playlist)
- 3 hours total
€200 for the boat, max 8 guests. €25 per person if you’ve got a full boat — beats walking-tour group sunset cruises that charge €50/pax for a 90-minute crowded boat.
Best month
September. Sea is still warm (22-25°C) so you can swim before the sunset. Light is golden and the air is cooling. Crowds are receding so the bay near Lokrum is quiet.
May is second best — the air is still warm enough but spring light is crisp.
What to bring
- Light jacket or sweater (it gets cool fast on the water)
- Phone in a waterproof case
- Camera if you’re serious — sunset moves fast
- Sunglasses for the golden hour
Special occasions
We do a lot of proposals on the sunset cruise. Honest tip: tell us in advance and we’ll:
- Time the prosecco pour for the moment you want
- Anchor in our most-private cove
- Hand you a small ring box if you’d like a “I forgot my pocket” alibi
- Take a photo at the moment without you noticing
No upcharge. Just say “I’m proposing” when you book.
What we don’t do
- Live music on board (cliché, kills the moment)
- Photographer add-on (we take a few photos for free; for proper photos hire a separate photographer)
- “Sunset + dinner” combos (we drop you back at 20:30; eat at a Lapad restaurant)
- Rent the boat to large parties for stag-do “sunset booze cruises”
