Private vs Group Boat Tour Dubrovnik: When Each Is Worth It
Honest breakdown of private boat charter vs group tour from Dubrovnik. Per-person cost, experience differences, and the kind of group each suits.
The honest math: a private boat is cheaper than a group tour for parties of 4 or more. Here’s the breakdown.
Per-person cost comparison
Same destination (Blue Cave + Lopud half-day), different formats:
| Format | Boat | Total cost | Per person (5 pax) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private (this site) | Quicksilver 755 SD + skipper | €450 | €90 |
| Private (this site) | Pasara, no skipper | €150 | €30 |
| Group walk-up tour | 20-pax wooden boat | €60/pax | €60 |
| Group OTA tour | 12-pax speedboat | €75/pax | €75 |
For 4-5 people, the Pasara private rental beats every group tour on price and experience. For 6-10 people, our Quicksilver 675 or 755 SD with skipper is comparable per-person but private.
When a group tour is right
- Solo traveller: hard to justify a private boat for one. Group tour = €60, instant social.
- Two people on tight budget: €120 vs €150. The €30 saving might tip you to group.
- You want to meet other travellers: group tours are sociable.
When private is right
- 3+ people: private wins on cost AND quality
- Family with kids: private = no waiting for 18 strangers to use the toilet
- Anyone wanting to swim more than 5 minutes per stop: group tours are clock-driven; private is mood-driven
- Anyone shy in groups
The hidden quality difference
Group tour mid-day at Blue Cave:
- Arrive 11:00 with 3 other boats
- Queue 20 minutes to enter the cave
- 5 minutes inside
- 10 minutes back at the boat
- On to Lopud, dock at busy main pier, 1 hour ashore, back
Private tour same day:
- Arrive 09:30 (we check the cave traffic forecast)
- Empty cave, 25 minutes inside + snorkel
- Pebble cove east of cave for 30 min
- Lopud — anchor at quiet bay, swim, lunch on the boat or konoba
- Sunset detour past city walls
Same boat hours, completely different day.
Pricing transparency
Group tour pricing on Viator looks low (€60/pax) but you don’t see the actual operator. The boat owner is being paid €25-30/pax — Viator pockets €30-35. The owner cuts corners (older boat, fewer crew, faster turnarounds) to make margin.
Direct private booking on this site: 100% goes to us, we have margin to maintain the boat properly, briefing isn’t rushed.
Edge case: large group (8-10 pax)
For 8-10 people, our Quicksilver 755 SD (9 pax) or Quicksilver 805 SD (10 pax) is the only sensible option. No group tour can comfortably fit 10 friends together — you get split across boats and the day fragments.
Quicksilver 755 SD with skipper, full day, 9 people: €450. €50 per person. Beats every group tour I’ve seen.
What we don’t offer
- Bachelor party packages with stripper boats (some operators do; we don’t)
- “Booze cruises” with bottomless beer (legal liability, we won’t)
- Extreme low-cost group tours (we can’t and stay in business)
